Fiction to Fiction is Hans Broek’s first solo exhibition at Artcore/Fabrice Marcolini. The title references the artist’s appropriation of images from filmic or art historical fictions and their use to create his own personal fiction. Governed by Broek’s world view, the paintings explore the individual construction of personal fictions designed to cope with an incoherent and chaotic reality.
Reinforcing Broek’s theme is his signature painting technique, which plays with the mental construction of depth and vision by creating multi-planar tension, applied to scenes culled from Hollywood films and appropriated from European art history. Broek’s method evokes the soul of his characters alongside the complexity of their roles and functions in contemporary culture.
Dutch-born Broek considers his recent move from Los Angeles to New York pivotal to his production, bringing with it new subject matter. While in Los Angeles, Broek became known for his California landscapes and credits New York’s closer ties to Europe with his newfound fascination with Old World subject matter. Broek has exhibited broadly, with shows throughout the Netherlands and the rest of Europe, as well as in the United States. His paintings have hung in such esteemed institutions as the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and at the De Pont Foundation in Tilburg.
