Fabrice Marcolini is pleased to announce Doug Kirton’s first Artcore solo exhibition.
See True features Kirton’s new series of monumental-sized paintings. Playing with themes of contemplation, the artist captures on canvas brief moments in time where colour and shape interact in complex ethereal ways. This series and these moments are perceived through reflections of Chicago city-scapes on a rainy day.
“Kirton’s painting gestures and effects disrupt the visual register of photography, shifting our position of access toward the realm of painting” (Rick Nixon, When Art Happens: Reflections and Experience in Painting, Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery online catalogue). His use of techniques, such as trompe l’oeil, emphasizes the relevance of traditional painting skills and its wide ranging possibilities. Through the use of technology, such as digital photography, Kirton approximates his final paintings.
For Kirton, “work starts with the perception of things seen and sensations felt. Proceeding in the studio allows [him] to internalize and clarify all of this information in a personal way… Above all, painting is a research tool; the way [he] discovers the world and [his] place in it.”
Born in London, Ontario, Doug Kirton received his B.F.A. from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and his M.F.A. from the University of Guelph. Kirton is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Waterloo.
